# Tags

> Label contacts with tags, and use the Tags page to create, rename, merge and delete tags, see who carries a tag, and export those contacts.

A **tag** is a label you put on contacts, such as `hot-lead`, `spanish` or `webinar-june`. Tags let you group contacts across lists, filter your [contact search](https://docs.biglysales.com/manual/contacts.md) and build new lists. One contact can carry many tags.

> **Not the same as AI call outcomes:** Your AI agent also labels calls with outcomes such as "meeting booked" or "not interested". Those outcomes are separate from the tags on this page and are managed by the AI. See [Bot activity](https://docs.biglysales.com/manual/bot-activity.md).

## Before you start

You need permission to create, edit or delete tags. See [Team members](https://docs.biglysales.com/manual/team-members.md).

## Add tags to contacts

- **On import**: tags you add on the **Name and Tags** step go on every contact in that import. See [Importing contacts](https://docs.biglysales.com/manual/importing-contacts.md).
- **On one contact**: open the contact, click **Edit**, and use **+ Add tag**. See [Contacts](https://docs.biglysales.com/manual/contacts.md#edit-a-contact).
- **From a search**: when you click **Create List from All Results**, the optional **Tag** goes on every contact in the new list.

## Open the Tags page

Click **Tags** in the top navigation. Your tags are listed alphabetically, grouped by first letter. The small number next to each tag is how many contacts carry it.

To find a tag, type in the search box and press Enter.

## Create a tag

1. Click **New Tag**.
2. Type the name.
3. Click **Add**.

Tag names must be unique in your account. If the name is taken, an error appears under the field.

## Rename a tag

1. Click the tag to select it. The toolbar shows **1 items selected**.
2. Click **Edit**.
3. Change the name and click **Update**.

The new name shows on every contact that has the tag.

## Merge tags

Use merge to clean up duplicates such as `Hot Lead`, `hot-lead` and `hotlead`.

1. Click the tag you want to **keep** first.
2. Click each tag you want to merge into it.
3. Click **Merge**.

Contacts with any of the selected tags now carry the first tag, and the other tags are deleted. If you select only one tag, Bigly asks you to select more.

## Delete tags

1. Select one or more tags.
2. Click **Delete**.
3. Confirm with **Yes, delete it!**

The tags are removed from your tag list. The contacts themselves aren't deleted.

## See and export the contacts with a tag

1. Select one or more tags.
2. Click **View**. A new tab opens listing every contact with those tags.
3. Use **Search here...** to narrow the list, or click **Edit** on a contact to change it.
4. Click **Export** to download the contacts as a spreadsheet.

The export runs in the background. You see **Export job started successfully!**, and the file is ready to download when it finishes.

## Common questions

**Can I turn a tag into a list?** Use [contact search](https://docs.biglysales.com/manual/contacts.md) with the tag as a filter, then click **Create List from All Results**.

**Why do I see two tags with the same name?** Tags created in different places can end up duplicated. Merge them.
